St. Valentine

 

As is the case with so many things connected to venerable religious traditions, the historical evidence is thin around the person Valentine, after which today's celebration is named. 

In fact, church records of early martyrs list three Valentines, two of whom lived and died in Rome and the other in Africa around the third century. 

Either individually or collectively, they are patrons of love, beekeeping and epilepsy.
