You can hardly blame Elmer and the executive for being cads.
Audiences were just too willing to buy their guff.
Folks feel good about the deception.
And what's better than feeling good?
We enjoy being around people who make us feel good,
who tell us we're attractive and charming,
who flatter us and laugh at our jokes,
who shovel our half-baked grub and boxed wine with gusto,
who will say just about anything to keep the party going.
Who can blame Elmer and the executive for getting a little crazy when the audiences start to leave, having had enough of the lies and the show.
We eventually get tired of people blowing smoke at us, taking us for fools, who aren't interested in friends but fans.
Thinning crowds mean there's more room for those who have been fleeced and conned to come for their pound of flesh.
Some will get it. Others won't.
And some will say getting caught will make the shysters change their ways.
Maybe Elmer did. Maybe.
The executive won't.
